I Gather Bones…

January 16, 2020
cactus, sky, clouds

“to live in this world
you must be able
to do three things
to love what is mortal;
to hold it
against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.”
– Mary Oliver

Gathering Bones
In my dream
I gather bones
Dog and cat bones
Mother and father bones
Aunts and sister bones
Their different stories
Stored in the marrow
Leach into the earth
In my dream
I pick up a shovel
And with all my strength
Move the earth from
Here to there
From there to here
In my dream
Letters, words, sentences
Take form but
I’m left speechless
While my bones absorb
The stories of the past
