“Daisy, Daisy give me your heart to do
I’m half crazy, hopeful in love with you
It won’t be a stylish marriage
I can’t afford the carriage
But you look sweet upon the street
On a bicycle built for two.”
Harry Dacre, Daisy Bell
After being told as a child by her music teacher that she was tone deaf my mother stopped singing. When she turned 90 years old she found her voice when she lost her memory. My mother forgot who I was, forgot my name, forgot I was her daughter, but she remembered the songs of her youth.
Daisy Bell (A Bicycle Built For Two) was one of the songs she sang the most. She sounded like a young girl when she sang, full of glee and mischievousness.
One of the last memories I have of my mother was when we sang God bless America together. She held onto her walker with one hand and raised a clenched fist into the air with the other. She sang her heart out; victorious, proud, and free.
Remember to sing your life song loud and clear for everyone to hear. We’re listening…
