“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
– Roald Dahl
Today’s joyous wonderful surprise was a small shop I wandered into on a side road in the city center. The space was dark and so full there was barely room to move.
There was wood furniture stacked to the ceiling, piles of old photographs, books and letters, broken clocks, material, paintings, mirrors and dolls. A pervasive smell of must, cigarette smoke and secrets hung in the air. I wanted to know the story behind every item – a lifetime of stories.
I just finished reading a book recommended called The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, a beautiful story filled with magic, illusion and mystery. This crowded shop held all those elements – minus the circus tent.
I wanted to sift through the piles in search of something I didn’t know I was looking for. Instead, I took a few photos, shook the owner’s hand, thanked him and went outside to continue searching for more magic.
