Saudade…

October 9, 2017
Porto Portugal

“A longing to wander tears my heart when I hear trees rustling in the wind at evening. If one listens to them silently for a long time, the longing reveals its kernel, its meaning. It is not so much a matter of escaping from one’s suffering, though it may seem to be so. It is a longing for home, for a memory of the mother, for new metaphors for life. It leads home.”
– Herman Hesse, Wandering

The Portuguese have a word for the longing Herman Hesse wrote about: saudade.

In the later half of the 20th century, saudade became associated with the feeling of longing for one’s homeland, as hundreds of thousands of Portuguese-speaking people left in search of better futures in South America, North America and Western Europe.
