Remember How To Fly…

August 13, 2018

“A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
– Maya Angelou, Caged Bird

I went to the bird market in Porto on Sunday. It broke my heart to see the tiny birds crammed into cages. I stood for a long time in front of six tiny cages with two love birds in each one. Each pair leaned into each other in various ways for support and comfort. Bless their wild beating hearts, they still sang their beautiful songs. All the birds did.

Listening to those birds sing reminded that even when we don’t feel free we can still touch each other, we can still sing our song, we can still breathe the air, and we can still hope that when our cage door finally opens we’ll remember how to fly.
