Along The Road…

May 17, 2018
Porto Portugal

Joy at the start
Fear in the journey
Joy in the coming home
A part of the heart
Gets lost in the learning
Somewhere along the road

Along the road
Your path may wander
A pilgrim’s faith may fail
Absence makes the heart grow stronger
Darkness obscures the trail

Cursing the quest
Courting disaster
Measureless nights forebode
Moments of rest
Glimpses of laughter
Are treasured along the road

Along the road
Your steps may tumble
Your thoughts may start to stray
But through it all a heart held humble
Levels and lights your way

Joy at the start
Fear in the journey
Joy in the coming home
A part of the heart
Gets lost in the learning
Somewhere along the road
– Dan Fogelberg, Along the Road

There’s a strange thing about writing about my travels – or even my life. I’m hesitant to write about the mundane, the annoying, the reality of the daily grind. Even the joy of a road trip has a daily grind to it that can get lost in the selected photos and memories that are shared.

What about the mosquitos that woke us at 3:00 AM because the open windows had no screens, what about being hungry and finding no place to eat since it’s Monday (or too early, or too late) and everything is closed, what about the fights with the GPS that insisted we take every backroad possible adding hours to the journey and then when the signal fades leaves us lost in an empty village, what about the hard mattresses – lumpy pillows and lukewarm water, what about the search for where to go – where to stay and the constant packing and unpacking…

A part of the heart may get lost in the learning somewhere along the road, but a part of the heart also gets found – and after a week back home I’m already looking forward to my next trip.
