Chew Every Morsel…

Porto Portugal

“If you truly get in touch with a piece of carrot, you get in touch with the soil, the rain, the sunshine. You get in touch with Mother Earth and eating in such a way, you feel in touch with true life, your roots, and that is meditation.

If we chew every morsel of our food in that way we become grateful and when you are grateful, you are happy.
– Thich Nhat Hanh

Today I went to the feira de produtos biológicos do Porto, an organic farmers market held on Saturday mornings in the Parque da Cidade. The market is small with about a dozen booth set up under grapevines in what looks like an old stone farmhouse courtyard. The quality of the produce is higher, more extensive and less expensive then it is in the few small health food stores in Porto.

I bought as much as I could carry through the park back to the bus stop. My bags were heavy with fruit and vegetables, but my heart was light and excited about my bounty.

I smiled the whole way home…
