“She had studied the universe all her life, but had overlooked its clearest message: For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love.”
– Carl Sagan, Contact
I recently found out about the Voyager Golden Records, two phonograph records that were included aboard both Voyager spacecrafts launched in 1977. The records contain natural sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. There are musical selections from different cultures and eras and spoken greetings in fifty-nine languages – intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or for future humans, who may find them. The items were selected for NASA by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan of Cornell University.
Looking at the contents of the records was fascinating. Such debates the committee must have had. This list gave me the idea to have fun exploring what images, songs, and sounds represent the story of my life.
Here are some greetings and sounds from Voyager Golden Record. I’ll post the music and images list in the comments section.
