I Remember…

Girl laughing, Point Roberts Washington

“Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas time.”
– Laura Ingalls Wilders
.
I remember the anticipation
Rising early to the smell of pine and coffee in the air
Stockings hung by the fire, gifts under the tree, the perfect bike, jacket and book
I remember the happy mess of wrapping paper on the floor
My mother’s cardamon Christmas cakes
The card games played, the roast eaten, the carols sang
I remember a family gathered together
All grievances and differences stuffed away
On a day where love glittered as brightly as the lights on the tree
