“After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.”
– Nelson Mandela
The city of Porto, continuously inhabited since the fourth century, was built on the hills above the Douro River. These hills makes the city pleasant on the eyes, but hard on the body.
Many buildings are built into the cliff face overlooking the river. You can get up and down on stairs cut into the stone cliff face, or walk on narrow cobblestone sidewalks.
If you’re not in shape when you arrive, you’ll get in shape after a few days of walking the hills.
