Dear Rose…

“To love ourselves and support each other in the process of becoming real is perhaps the greatest single act of daring greatly.”
– Brené Brown, Daring Greatly

At the moment the woman at the immigration office stamped my residency letter for Portugal I glanced at my phone. A text from my friend Diane said our high school friend Rose had died after a five year battle with cancer.

We all hope things will always go on the way we want them to.
Our friends will stay with us.
Our loved ones will hold us.
Our parents won’t grow old.
Our bodies will stay forever young.

But friends die.
Loved ones leave.
Parents forget.
Bodies change.

In the meantime
we need to
wake up.
Pay attention to
what’s possible.
Dare greatly.

My moment of joy at achieving my dream to live in Europe will always be mixed with the sadness of losing a friend. And for that I’m grateful.

Rose will continue to remind me to embrace this one wild and precious life
to get up when I’m knocked down
to be scared and do it anyway
to love what is
to continue to dream
to stay true to myself and
to dance like nobody’s watching.

Dear Rose
thank you for
showing me
how to keep on
daring greatly.
