“Once you get used to people giving to you as much as you give to them and receive all of the benefits of a less stressful life, you will not consider putting yourself last.”
– Amanda Owen
A year ago last May, when I first came to Porto, I was reading a book called, “The Power of Receiving,” by Amanda Owen. I was open to receive and things kept coming my way – including the unexpected, joyous surprise of the idea, the support, the apartment that made the move to Portugal possible.
Here are some ideas from Amanda’s book:
The definition of ‘to receive’ is to accept willingly.
Receiving is a skill you can learn.
Non-receivers are drawn to non-givers.
We honor givers – but if we aren’t willing to receive there’s no one to give to.
It’s more vulnerable to receive than it is to give.
There’s often shame in needing help.
Three action steps to encourage receiving:
Accept all compliments – simply say thank you.
Be spiritually naked and authentically you – don’t try to be perfect.
Count your blessings – write down 5 things you’re grateful for every single day.
With these three steps it will feel like you’ve lowered a flood gate by allowing energy, people, and things to come towards you.
The goal is 50% giving, doing, and activity – and 50% receptivity, receiving, allowing.
Receive everything (no matter what it is), then decide later…what this does is it begins to fill you and you enter a world where people can’t do enough for you, they want to give to you and begin to be more giving.
When you ask for what you need and receive what people and the world have to give, you open up pathways you couldn’t see before, stimulate your imagination in ways that could not happen before, and have energy that was not previously available to you.
There’s no end to what we can receive: ideas complitments, apologies, healing, acceptance, creativity, synchronicity, visions, growth, letting go, forgiveness, alignment, flow, gifts, love, guidance, kindness, miracles, a new job, money, recognition, time off, wishes, friendship, support…
I didn’t even realize I didn’t know how to receive. But now I do and it’s made all the difference.
What are you open to receive?
