“One sees clearly only with the heart. The essential is invisible to the eye.”
– Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
It started with the children’s magazine Highlights game,
where you looked for what was different between two illustrations.
Then I watched my alcoholic father for the slightest change in his mood.
Then I watched my mother’s every move to figure out how to keep peace in the house.
Then I watched as a waitress for every need a diner might have.
Then I watched as a photographer for the light, the movement, the contrast.
Then I watched in my software business for every little bug in our programs.
Then I watched as a writer for the difference every word made.
Now my favorite things to watch are things I can’t see:
My breath. Am I breathing too shallow, too fast, too slow?
My thoughts. Am I slipping into negativity, or fear, or self-imposed limitations?
My time. Am I spending time with people who allow me to be all I can be?
My heart. Am I being the most loving person I can be and am I letting love be my guide?
